A bit of a departure from my most recent work, but I do have other interests
So I read an interview with Olivia Wilde where she discusses being the new "it" girl in science fiction and what science fiction role she'd love to take on. She said she'd love to play a "female Captain Kirk" and I swear I died a little bit inside
So my little fanboy brain just started turning like mad and I came up with this.
I didn't want to simply make her a female version of Kirk, I wanted to make it richer than that so I created a whole new story just for this piece
It takes place in the post Nemesis era. That is Star Trek Nemesis, the final TNG movie and during the current era being used in the Star Trek novels that take place in the 24th century after The Borg have decimated the Federation prior to their final extinction in The Destiny trilogy of novels. While recovering and rebuilding efforts begin in the Federation (several well known Trek worlds were completely destroyed before the end) several long standing adversaries of the Federation consolidated into what became known as The Typhon Pact. Much like the Warsaw Pact to our NATO back in the day. So it seemed like an interesting place in which to set these adventures.
In the novels, little Ezri Dax from Deep Space Nine discovered a part of herself that she had not accessed before through her Trill symbiont. This former Dax host had a strength and ability at command that gave Ezri the confidence to leave the field of psychiatry and her post as the counselor on Deep Space Nine and transfer to the command track and duty on a starship. That ship, the USS Aventine she would come to take command of during a crisis in which the Captain and first officer were killed. She would retain command and along with the Enterprise and Captain Riker's ship the USS Titan, was instrumental in finally stopping the Borg once and for all.
The Aventine is a Vesta class ship. A new class that utilizes slipstream technology that USS Voyager brought back from the Delta Quadrant. It's the manner in which Borg cubes traveled and is much faster than warp. There are seven ships in the class and with the exception of the flagship of the class (USS Vesta, which is apparently not in service) they are all named for the seven hills of Rome. Some of those names have been used already in the novels to name other ships of the class so I adopted one that hasn't for the ship I would use.
I figured with most of the fleet that hadn't been destroyed serving to recover and rebuild, only a few ships that could really be dedicated to the task would be used in other endeavors. The Enterprise is the Federation flagship and in the books has been doing that job of roaming around, helping however they can, waving the flag, putting out fires, etc. The Titan (which has it's own novel series) is a true exploration vessel and there's precious few of them left so it and its sister ships are back to their mission of seeking out new life and new civilizations. The Voyager it seems (altho I haven't kept up) is heading back to the Delta Quadrant on a proper mission of exploration. So I figured a ship capable of slipstream would be ideal for patrolling a long border, like say the border with the Typhon Pact.
The Romulans, Gorn, Tholians, Tzenkethi, Breen and a couple other races make for interesting foes and a ship capable of running the entire border in no time at all would get to tangle with all of them. Perhaps even get in a few dust ups. All while not really interfering with established canon... even tho the novels aren't considered canon, I do and I'm a continuity whore
So we have a ship, it has a name, derived from the seven hills of Rome. Where they spoke Latin. What's a cool Latin word that would make a cool title. Something that signifies a phoenix rising from the ashes, much like the Federation is trying to do, but less gauche and pretentious.
Renatus mean rebirth. Perfect.
Star Trek Renatus, telling the tales of the USS Palatine under the command of Captain...
Renata is a girl's name, it's Latin, it means reborn, it has simpatico with the title. Renata will do. I don't want to use any established "Trek" name like a fanboy would, having her be the granddaughter of someone awesome is kinda lame. But another universe has a starship captain who's awesome, Malcolm Reynolds
But Renata Reynolds just didn't seem flashy enough. Malcolm Reynolds is played by Nathan Fillion... Nathan Fillion plays Rick Castle... Renata Castle. Captain Renata Castle.
So there's the particulars, now to make the damn thing.
Find a good render of the Vesta class (Mark Rademaker actually designed the ship thru a contest Pocket Books did and his design was used on the cover of one of the Typhon Pact novels) check.
Find a picture of Olivia Wilde that is attractive but not overtly sexy (this was not easy, the woman is hotter than the sun) check.
Find a female wearing a TNG era Starfleet uniform I can put Olivia's head on to (found a nice promo shot of Ezri Dax from the DS9 days) check.
Down to work, background, a star field, add some spacey wacey stuff for fun.
Change the color of Ezri's department from the science/medical green she wore on DS9 to command maroon.
Crop Olivia's head and paste it to Ezri's body, make sure it's in proportion.
Clean it all up, fix the hair, place it on the background.
Place the ship on top of both of those, clean it up where things overlap.
Add text, make the text cool.
Type a description that takes almost as long as it took to make the piece to describe how you made the piece, attach the piece and send
The Vesta class render is by Mark Rademaker.
The photo of Olivia Wilde I found on Reddit via Google Image Search so whoever took it, hope you don't mind
The Nicole de Boer as Ezri Dax photo is by Paramount Television which is a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures which own Star Trek.
Hope that covers everything, don't sue me, I'm just a fan
